2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class delivers elegant comfort and abundant luxury in a full range of models. The quintessential Mercedes-Benz, the E-Class lineup ranges from a thrifty diesel engine to a super-performance 577-horsepower AMG V8, with three stops in between. Body-style choices include a sedan and a wagon, or coupe and cabriolet (convertible). Rear-wheel drive and 4MATIC four-wheel drive are available.

The lineup includes the E250 BlueTec (diesel) sedan; E350 sedan or wagon; E400 sedan, wagon, coupe, or cabriolet; E550 coupe or cabriolet; and E63 AMG sedan or wagon. The E400 Hybrid has been dropped.

With an E-Class, you get unmistakable German presence thats both elegant and sporty. Not only is the E-Class a comfortable midsize luxury motorcar, it can even be enjoyable to drive.

Inside the roomy cabin are excellent materials and trim elements: the kind long associated with the brand. Controls feel solid. Standard leatherette upholstery and wood can be upgraded to supple leather and aluminum or carbon-look trim.

The 3.5-liter, direct-injected gasoline V6 that comes in the E350 produces 302 horsepower and can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 7 seconds. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo E400 V6 makes 329 horsepower. The 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 in the E550 whips up 402 horsepower. Topping the line, the E63 AMGs 5.5-liter biturbo V8 now generates 577 horsepower and is capable of accelerating from zero to 60 in 4 seconds. A 7-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Top fuel-economy choice is the E250 diesel, which loses a little acceleration but is EPA-rated at 42 mpg in highway driving. The 2.1-liter BlueTec four-cylinder makes 195 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Even the performance-focused gasoline versions include fuel-saving technologies like Eco mode and engine stop/start.

Numerous active-safety features can monitor blind spots, detect driver drowsiness, automatically control high beams, maintain distance from vehicle ahead, and help you stay in your lane. A stereo camera system enables 3-D imaging of traffic and road obstacles ahead.

Every E-Class gets the mbrace2 smartphone connectivity suite. For 2016, mbrace adds three pay upgrade options: mbrace Secure, Concierge, and Entertain. For 2016, AMG models get S equipment that was formerly optional.

Two body styles have earned Top Safety Pick+ status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but the E-Class gets a disappointing four-star overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.


2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class comes with a new edgy look, available in many models and iterations. The 2014 E-Class might be remembered for the breakthrough of intelligent drive, as the E-Class smashes into the Brave New World of the car doing the driving for you, with a burst of electronic enhancements in pursuit of safety. Mercedes counts 11 of them, down to anti-glare continuous high-beam headlamps.

Because the E-Class competes with the Cadillac CTS and Audi A5, it needs to be pretty, and the new face of the 2014 E-Class brings it alive. The interior is cleaned up for 2014 as well.

Over two days in Oregon, we drove the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTEC Sedan, E350 Cabriolet, E550 Cabriolet, E400 Hybrid Sport Sedan, and E350 4MATIC Wagon. Each has something special to offer. Give us our pick and well take the wagon. The black paint and brown leather upholstery had something to do with that.

The new E-Class is more dynamic, improved to the eye from every angle. Mercedes calls it elegant and poised, and it is that, but its aggressive too. The front end is especially sporty, while character lines on the sides are cleaner. The tweaks keep Mercedes moving from old mans car to muscle car.

The E350 with the V6 makes 302 horsepower, 273 foot-pounds of torque, and accelerates from zero to 60 in 6.1 seconds. The E550 with the V8 makes 402 hp and 443 ft-lb, and takes 4.9 seconds. We prefer the V6 because its smooth, plenty fast, and more efficient.

Theres also a 2.1-liter turbodiesel that makes 195 horsepower with a robust 369 lb-ft of torque, and comes standard with 4MATIC all-wheel drive; we got 40.6 miles per gallon driving on two-lanes and freeway. The diesel makes more sense than the V6 Hybrid, which delivered just 29.8 mpg. We got 25.0 mpg in the V8-powered E550. The diesel is slower than the hybrid but more responsive.

All the E-Class models come standard with the ECO stop/start system, which shuts the engine off when the car stops. The Mercedes system is less intrusive than the BMW system.

In two days of driving different E-Class models, we have no big bad notes, only little ones. Suspensions: check. Transmission: check. Handling: check. It all works. You wont be unhappy or surprised. Youll like your ride and comfort. Just know what to expect in acceleration, and get a good feel for the transmission, and the rest is turn-key, in buying a Mercedes.

The interior is less changed than the exterior. The dashboard is smoother, every inch soft touch, with new two-piece trim in three woods. Beige leather and brown satin ash is beautiful, as is gray leather and black ash, and more we havent seen. Changes on the instrument panel for 2014 include a new cluster with nice off-white gauges, and sleeker air vents with an analog clock between them. Console switches are now dipped in chrome.

The soft top on the convertible is quietest in its class, says Mercedes, and with the optional Airscarf, Aircap, and wind deflectors, you can drive with the top down on brisk days. The seats are a bit different in the models. In the Cabriolets theyre Recaro-like, with tight ribbed leather.

As for the active safety enhancements, theres a whole lotta assisting going on here. We have collision prevention assist, parking assist, steering assist, lane-keeping assist, cross-traffic assist, rear-end collision assist, pedestrian recognition assist, and last but not least Attention Assist. Thats the hand that reaches out of the dashboard and slaps you. Just kidding.

We wonder if some of this assistance might take us into the land of unintended consequences. As in, you might get creamed from behind when it late-brakes for you to prevent your smashing the guy in front of you. But were getting ahead of ourselves. Well wait for Top Gear to take a safety-optioned E-Class and drive it toward a brick wall at 30 mph with another one on its tail, to see what happens. Well wait for Jeremy Clarkson to drive blindfolded with no feet on the pedals, toward Richard Hammond bound to a post.


2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup adds a hybrid model for 2013 and otherwise carries over largely unchanged. E-Class is extensively redesigned for 2014.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E400 Hybrid borrows its gasoline V6 engine from the E350 and adds a 20-kilowatt electric motor. The direct-injection V6 generates 302-horsepower while the electric motor adds another 184 pound-feet of torque.

All 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class models come standard with a marque-exclusive, next-generation mbrace2 telematic assist system, which moves into the Cloud and offer more functions and features than before.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup includes sedans, coupes, convertibles, and wagons with diesel, V6, or V8 power.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E350, E550, and E63 AMG models are each a technological tour de force, yet none of the technology is intrusive. On the street, the cars are robust and exhibit the engineering excellence that has defined them for decades.

The E-Class Cabriolet, or convertible, features an innovative soft top thats nearly one-inch thick with three layers of acoustic sound dampening. The design leaves good trunk space, and provides wind protection with the top down. The soft top disappears in 17 silent seconds, as Mercedes says.

The E-Class sits in the middle of the Mercedes car line, between the compact C-Class and the big S-Class. Its the companys best-selling car worldwide, and as such it defines the brands essence. Every E-Class model delivers an excellent balance of passenger space, luxury, style, and impressive performance in a practical, manageably sized package.

Like other more recent Mercedes-Benz models, the E-Class looks angular and technical, but is still quite pleasing to the eye. The current-generation E-Class debuted in 2010, with a new chassis strengthened to improve crash protection, reduce vibration and sharpen handling without adding weight. Yet if this generation of E-Class cars have a theme, it might be their high-tech control and management systems. Thats not surprising for a car that introduced a host of now-familiar features, from antilock brakes to airbags, to mass production.

The 2013 E-Class represents the most electronics-intensive model line Mercedes has offered to date, and most of the computer-managed systems focus on safety. An Attention Assist system monitors up to 70 driving parameters to determine whether the driver is getting drowsy behind the wheel and uses both visual and auditory warnings to tell the driver to pull over for rest. The Distronic Plus cruise control option features both blind-spot warning and lane-departure warning technology, while automatic self-adjusting headlights automatically dim the brights. And those systems are just the start.

Beyond the technological wizardry, the E-Class remains what it has always been, only a little nicer. Every model is smooth, quiet and appointed in elegant, understated fashion, with comfortable space for four or five passengers and a substantial load of luggage.

The gasoline V6 in the Mercedes E350 models displaces 3.5 liters and produces 302 horsepower. The new E400 Hybrid supplements the same gas engine with an electric motor rated 27 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.

E550 models are powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.6-liter V8, which delivers the turbine-like, overpowered feel that characterizes Germanys best autobahn blasters. The turbocharged diesel engine in the Mercedes E350 BlueTEC sedan is the smoothest, quietest diesel available in the United States. It delivers amazing bursts of acceleration for passing, with mileage that surpasses most other cars in this class by about 30 percent.

And if even thats not enough, the top-performing E63 AMG models boast a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 that cranks out 516 horsepower. To keep fuel use somewhat within reason, the E63 AMG comes standard with start/stop technology. A neat variant is the E63 AMG wagon.

Those seeking help through the worst of a northern winter can choose the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system for the E-Class sedans, wagon, and coupe.

The E-Class created a category of mid-sized luxury cars that has become one of the most competitive (and enjoyable) in todays automobile market. The 2013 E-Class models simply reinforce Mercedes credentials at or near the top of the class.
